Laptop Chargers, Docking Stations and USB-C Hubs — The Complete Buying Guide

Chargers, docking stations and USB-C hubs solve different problems, and the wrong choice is a common reason a laptop won’t charge or a second monitor stays dark. This guide explains what each does and walks through every one we supply, by brand, with the laptops each suits.

In short: A charger must match your laptop's connector and voltage and supply equal or higher wattage; a dock suits a fixed desk with several monitors and charges the laptop over one cable, while a travel hub or mobile adapter suits carrying and single-display use. Chargers here run from 35W to 330W across Apple, ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Surface; docks and hubs from a compact Dell mobile adapter to the four-display Dell SD25. Send your laptop model with your enquiry and the fit is confirmed before ordering.

Charger, dock or hub: which do you need?

A charger

Replaces a lost, worn or spare power adapter. It only supplies power, so match the connector, voltage and wattage to the laptop.

A docking station

Turns a desk into a workstation: several monitors, wired Ethernet, USB ports and power for the laptop over one cable. Best for fixed and shared desks.

A travel hub or mobile adapter

A compact adapter for HDMI, Ethernet and USB ports on the move. Most support one display at a time, and some pass power through to the laptop.

Not sure?

Send the laptop model with your enquiry. The connector, wattage and dock compatibility are confirmed before you order.

Choosing a charger

Match three things: the connector (USB-C, a barrel pin such as 6.0mm x 3.7mm, 7.4mm x 5.0mm or 4.0mm x 1.7mm, MagSafe or the Surface connector), the voltage printed on the original charger (for example 19.5V or 20V) and the wattage, which should be equal to or higher than the original. A laptop draws only the power it needs, but an underpowered charger can charge slowly or not at all, especially under load. For a step-by-step walk-through see our laptop chargers and power adapters guide.

Choosing a dock or hub

How many displays?

Docks such as the Dell SD25 drive up to four displays and the Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock drives two. The Dell DA300, DA305 and DA310 hubs support one display at a time.

How much power to the laptop?

Check the delivery wattage against the laptop’s charger: Lenovo ThinkPad dock up to 60W, Dell DA305 and DA310 up to 90W, Lenovo 150 up to 100W, and Dell SD25 130W to Dell systems (96W to others). The Dell DA300 does not pass power through.

Which ports?

List what sits on the desk: HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA displays, wired Ethernet (gigabit or 2.5GbE), USB-A devices and card readers. Match the hub or dock to that list.

Fixed desk or travel?

Docks stay on the desk and connect with one cable; hubs and mobile adapters have short built-in cables and fit in a bag. Brand-matched docks also give the most reliable results with that brand’s laptops.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a dock or a hub?

A dock suits a fixed desk with several monitors and power for the laptop; a hub or mobile adapter suits travel and single-display setups.

Can I connect two monitors to a travel hub?

The Dell DA300, DA305 and DA310 support one display at a time; for two or more displays choose a dock such as the Dell SD25 or the Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock.

Will a dock or hub charge my laptop?

Those with power delivery do: the Lenovo ThinkPad dock up to 60W, Dell DA305 and DA310 up to 90W, Lenovo 150 up to 100W and Dell SD25 130W to Dell systems. The Dell DA300 does not pass power through.

Can I use a higher-wattage charger than the one that came with my laptop?

Generally yes, provided the voltage and connector match; the laptop draws only the power it needs. A lower-wattage charger can charge slowly or not at all.

Does the voltage need to match?

Yes. Match the voltage, such as 19.5V or 20V, and the connector size exactly; wattage can be equal or higher.

Can a USB-C charger charge any laptop?

Only laptops that charge over USB-C, and the charger must supply enough wattage: 65W chargers suit many thin laptops, while gaming and workstation laptops often need 150W or more.

How do I find which charger or dock my laptop needs?

Check the rating label on the original charger or the laptop's specifications for voltage, wattage and connector type, or send your laptop model with the enquiry.

Do you provide a GST invoice for ITC?
